Lessons Learned from the Literature

Accelerated Reader's philosophy is that by using their system, students are motivated to read more and better books which, in turn, will lead to increases in overall reading achievement and self-esteem (Pavonetti, Brimmer, & Cipielewski, 2002).

There are many research studies on Accelerated Reader that have positive findings and there are many research studies that had negative findings.

All of the research found on "AR creating lifelong readers" was negative.

There was more positive research found on "AR and attitudes toward reading" than negative.

There was more negative research found on "AR and motivation" than positive.

The research studies on "AR and increasing comprehension" was split evenly between positive findings and negative findings.

There was more negative research found on "AR and book selection" than positive.
